Hapkido is a dynamic Korean martial art that combines elements of various fighting styles, including aikido, judo, and taekwondo. Developed in the mid-20th century by Choi Yong-Sool, Hapkido emphasises circular motion, redirection of force, and joint locks to neutralise opponents. It is known for its comprehensive approach to self-defence, incorporating striking, kicking, throwing, and grappling techniques.
Hapkido training focuses on developing both physical and mental strength, with an emphasis on practical application in real-world situations. Students learn to utilise an opponent's energy and momentum against them, enabling even smaller practitioners to effectively defend themselves against larger attackers.
Kickboxing is a stand-up combat sport that combines elements of boxing, karate, Muay Thai, and other martial arts. It originated in Japan in the 1960s and quickly gained popularity worldwide. Kickboxing emphasises powerful punches and kicks, with matches typically taking place in a boxing ring.
The sport has evolved into various styles, including full-contact, semi-contact, and light-contact kickboxing. Each style has its own set of rules and scoring systems. Kickboxing is not only a competitive sport but also an excellent fitness activity, providing a full-body workout that improves cardiovascular endurance, strength, and coordination.
